Smart Controls for Learning Spaces at René-Saint-Pierre

Background

René-Saint-Pierre is a school that serves both primary and secondary students, making it a space that stays active from early morning through the afternoon. Classrooms, corridors, and shared spaces are constantly in use, though not always at the same time. Lighting needed to support learning without becoming a distraction for students or teachers.

The school wanted a system that feels natural in daily use. Lights should respond automatically when students enter a room, adjust when daylight is available, and remain easy for staff to override when needed. The focus was on comfort, reliability, and simplicity rather than complex controls.

Objectives

  • Support a comfortable learning environment with responsive lighting
  • Automate classrooms and shared spaces using motion and light sensing
  • Reduce manual switching for teachers and staff
  • Improve overall efficiency while keeping the system easy to use

Challenges:

In a school setting, lighting has to work quietly in the background. Students move between classrooms frequently, and teachers should not have to manage lighting controls during lessons. At the same time, each room is used differently throughout the day, which makes fixed lighting inefficient.

Another challenge was ensuring consistency. Lighting needed to behave the same way every day so staff could rely on it, while still allowing flexibility for presentations, exams, or after-school activities.

Solutions

Radiar AF10 – 2 channel AC powered 0-10V fixture controller with inbuilt relay
Radiar AF10 was used to manage multiple lighting circuits within classrooms and learning zones. Its dual-channel control allowed balanced dimming where different lighting levels were needed for teaching, discussions, or quiet study time.

PSC-WCM-450-BLE-WS – Wireless 0-10V single channel AC powered room controller with inbuilt relay
These room controllers provided stable and predictable lighting control for individual spaces. They ensured each classroom responded consistently, without requiring manual adjustments throughout the school day.

PSC-DM-I-WS-100-BLE-WS – Wireless motion sensor dimmer wall switch
The 1-button sensor switches gave teachers a simple way to interact with the lighting when required. With motion sensing and dimming combined, the switch stayed intuitive and easy to use.

Cyrus AP – AC powered wireless PIR motion and light sensor with low-bay lens
Cyrus AP sensors were installed with ceiling mounts and low-bay lens accessories to suit classroom heights. These sensors helped lights turn on only when rooms were occupied and adjust naturally when daylight was available, supporting both comfort and efficiency.

Enor E – Gateway with RTC, Ethernet and astronomical clock
Enor E connected the entire lighting system and handled scheduling and time accuracy. Its real-time clock ensured lighting routines stayed reliable even after power interruptions, while remote access allowed system oversight without disrupting school activities.

Result

The lighting across the school now adapts smoothly to daily activity. Classrooms light up when students arrive and remain comfortable throughout lessons. Shared areas respond automatically without staff intervention, and teachers retain control whenever needed.

The system improved consistency, reduced unnecessary lighting, and supported a calmer learning environment. Most importantly, it did so without adding complexity to the school’s daily routine.
