DALI Switches: What They Are and How They Differ from Normal Switches

A wall switch can do more than turn lights on and off. In a DALI lighting system, it can adjust brightness, control groups of lights and recall preset lighting scenes—all from a familiar wall panel.
What Is a DALI Switch?
DALI stands for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface, a digital communication protocol for lighting control.
A normal switch connects or disconnects electricity to operate a light. A DALI wall control communicates with the lighting system, which responds with a configured action, such as dimming lights or selecting a scene. The lighting drivers normally remain powered, ready to receive commands.
In a typical DALI-2 system, an application controller interprets button inputs and sends commands to the drivers. This controller may be separate or built into the wall control.
How Does It Compare with Other Switches?

Choosing the Right DALI Part for Your Control Function
Start with how the user wants to operate the lighting. DALI-2 defines different input-device functions through specific parts of IEC 62386.

These parts describe how inputs are reported; the application controller determines the resulting lighting action. For example, a Part 301 button can be configured for switching, dimming or scene selection.
A Complete DALI Ecosystem
A DALI switch works as part of a connected system comprising wall controls, occupancy and daylight sensors, an application controller, a bus power supply and compatible lighting drivers.
Together, these components combine everyday manual control with automation. In a meeting room, occupants can select a presentation scene from a wall panel, while occupancy and daylight inputs help the controller manage lighting according to the room’s configuration.
Bringing the Ecosystem Together with Lumos Controls
Lumos Controls provides integration capabilities that bring compatible DALI lighting, switches and sensors into its broader connected lighting ecosystem. Through the appropriate controllers, gateways and interfaces, projects can combine DALI devices with Lumos Controls wireless devices for coordinated control.
This enables a complete project solution covering manual switching, dimming, scenes and sensor-based automation. The selected gateway or controller must support the required input-device parts and functions, so compatibility is established at the system level.
