Modernizing School Lighting with Flexible Wireless Controls

Background
Holy Name School has served students in North Omaha for more than a century, providing education from early childhood through eighth grade. To support its learning environment, the school selected a Lumos Controls solution designed to modernize lighting operation while simplifying installation and everyday use.

The Challenge
Educational facilities contain classrooms, corridors, common areas, offices, and multipurpose spaces; each with different lighting requirements. Holy Name School needed a solution that could:
- Provide intuitive local lighting control
- Support occupancy-based automation
- Reduce unnecessary energy use
- Minimize new control wiring and installation disruption
- Accommodate different room layouts and usage patterns
- Provide a flexible foundation for future improvements
The Lumos Controls Solution
The specified solution combines Bluetooth® Mesh wall controllers, WiSilica-enabled room controllers, occupancy-sensing devices, and compatible lighting accessories.
Together, these components create a distributed wireless control system that allows lighting to respond to occupants while giving teachers and staff convenient manual control when needed.
Solution Components

How the System Works
WiSilica-enabled room controllers form the foundation of the lighting-control network. Wireless wall controllers provide accessible manual operation without requiring extensive control wiring, while occupancy-responsive devices help ensure that lighting is available when spaces are in use and can be reduced when areas are unoccupied.
The Bluetooth Mesh architecture enables devices to communicate throughout the controlled environment, creating a flexible system that can be configured around the needs of classrooms and shared spaces.
Project Benefits
The Lumos Controls solution is designed to provide Holy Name School with:
- Simplified operation: Easy-to-use wall controls for teachers and staff
- Occupancy-based automation: Lighting that responds to how spaces are used
- Lower installation complexity: Wireless communication reduces control wiring requirements
- Improved flexibility: Room behavior and button functions can be configured for different applications
- Energy-conscious operation: Automated control helps reduce lighting use in unoccupied areas
- Scalable infrastructure: The system can support future changes and expansion
Building a Smarter Learning Environment
With Lumos Controls, Holy Name School gains more than individual lighting devices. It receives a coordinated control platform designed to improve usability, support energy-conscious operation, and adapt to the changing needs of its learning spaces.
The project demonstrates how wireless building controls can make intelligent lighting practical and accessible for educational facilities.
