Background

Lighting accounts for nearly 17% of electricity consumption in U.S. commercial buildings, making intelligent lighting controls one of the most effective ways to improve energy efficiency while enhancing occupant comfort. 

As part of its headquarters renovation, Turtle Roofing partnered with Lumos Controls to deploy a wireless Bluetooth® Mesh lighting control system that simplifies lighting management, automates everyday operations, and creates a more comfortable workplace. The solution combines intelligent fixture controllers, room controllers, occupancy sensing, emergency lighting controllers, wireless wall controls, and centralized management to deliver a connected, future-ready building. 

Objectives

The project aimed to: 

• Improve employee comfort and productivity  

• Reduce unnecessary lighting energy consumption  

• Automate lighting with occupancy sensing  

• Simplify day-to-day lighting management  

• Enable flexible wireless scene and dimming control  

• Integrate emergency lighting into a unified control platform

Challenges

The headquarters includes a mix of offices, meeting rooms, collaborative spaces, and shared areas, each requiring different lighting behaviors. The project also required emergency lighting to remain compliant while being seamlessly integrated into the overall lighting control strategy. The solution needed to deliver intelligent, room-specific control with minimal installation complexity and preserve the aesthetics of the renovated workspace. 

Solution 

Lumos Controls deployed a fully wireless lighting control ecosystem featuring: 

• Bluetooth® Mesh fixture and room controllers  

• Intelligent emergency room controllers for emergency lighting integration  

• Occupancy-based lighting automation  

• Wireless wall switches and scene control  

• Centralized scheduling, monitoring, and remote management  

• Flexible room-level control designed for future scalability  

 
Results

The new lighting control system delivers a connected workplace where lighting automatically adapts to occupancy while remaining intuitive for employees to control. By integrating both normal and emergency lighting into a unified wireless platform, Turtle Roofing benefits from simplified facility management, improved operational efficiency, enhanced occupant comfort, and a scalable infrastructure ready for future growth. 

This version subtly highlights the emergency lighting capability as a premium feature without making it the central focus, which aligns well with a commercial office case study.
