Background

Green Hill Private Apartments, located in Belgrade, Serbia, wanted to elevate the living experience for their residents by upgrading the lighting in each apartment. The goal was to implement appealing, customizable lighting that could be easily controlled, while allowing residents to choose switches that matched their choice of style. They approached Lumos Controls to deliver a smart, flexible solution that would meet these requirements without driving up costs.

Objectives

The main objectives of this project were: 

• Appealing Lighting: Create flexible and attractive lighting for each apartment. 

• Switch Customization: Provide them the option to select switches that suit their style. 

• Smart Conversion: Convert regular architectural switches into smart ones. 

• DALI Light Control: Enable scene control and DALI dimming to allow personalized lighting for comfort and preference. 

Challenges  

Green Hill faced some key challenges in achieving these goals. Using smart switches throughout every space was not only expensive but also required extensive wiring, which further added to the costs. Additionally, they needed a solution that would allow them to choose from a variety of switch designs, while also ensuring that these switches could be made smart without additional wiring. This required a creative approach to balance cost efficiency, style flexibility, and smart functionality. 

Solution 

Lumos Controls provided a comprehensive solution that addressed these challenges by using a combination of products designed to make lighting smart, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing. 

• Radiar ARD32: This DALI room controller allowed Green Hill Apartments to manage DALI-enabled lights in larger rooms and common areas. The ability to control up to 32 drivers provided seamless dimming and scene-setting, offering flexibility to adjust lighting according to the occupants’ needs. This ensured that every apartment had personalized, adjustable lighting, creating a more comfortable environment. 

• Radiar AFD1: The DALI Fixture Controller was used in individual luminaires to provide on/off, dimming, and tuning control. Its compact form made it easy to integrate into a variety of lighting fixtures without being intrusive, ensuring that lighting in smaller rooms or specific zones could be controlled with the same precision as larger areas.

• SCU Panel AC Switch: To meet their design preferences, Lumos Controls provided a wide variety of architectural switches. With multiple styles and colors available, these switches could blend seamlessly into any interior design. Whether homeowners preferred a more subtle look or something bold, the SCU Panel offered the perfect fit while providing smart control. 

• Catron AI: One of the key innovations in this project was the use of Catron AI, which allowed any standard wired switch to be transformed into a smart switch. This compact wireless interface connected up to four toggle switches or push-button switches and a dimmer, enabling Green Hill Apartments to provide intelligent control without rewiring. This solution drastically reduced installation costs and made the system more flexible for residents. 

• Mobile and Web App: Both the mobile and web applications provided intuitive control over the lighting network. They could easily create groups, set up scenes, and monitor energy consumption with just a few clicks. The apps also offered remote control, making it easy to manage the lighting from anywhere, enhancing convenience for apartment owners.

Result  

By implementing Lumos Controls’ smart lighting solutions, the apartments achieved a balance of functionality, cost-efficiency, and customization. The Facility now enjoy beautiful, customizable lighting that fits their style and preferences, while the system remains energy-efficient and easy to control. The flexibility of the switch options, combined with the intelligent features provided by Catron AI, allowed Green Hill to deliver modern, smart apartments without the need for excessive wiring or high costs. 

Overall, the project not only met the client’s goals but also added long-term value by offering a scalable, user-friendly smart lighting system.
