Wireless DALI Lighting Control System for University Buildings in Spain

Background
University of Murcia is a large educational institution where classrooms, lecture halls, study spaces, and shared campus areas remain active throughout the day. In environments like this, lighting requirements constantly shift depending on occupancy, schedules, and activities happening across different buildings.
Managing lighting manually across a campus of this scale can quickly become inefficient. Different departments often require different lighting levels, while facility teams need reliable control without constantly moving between spaces. The university was looking for a connected solution that could bring flexibility, simplify operation, and support long-term scalability.

Objectives
- Create a connected lighting ecosystem across multiple campus zones
- Simplify lighting adjustments for facility management teams
- Support DALI-based lighting control with wireless flexibility
- Improve user interaction through mobile and wireless scene control
- Ensure reliable network communication across large spaces
Challenges
Campus environments rarely operate on a fixed routine. Some classrooms stay occupied all day, while others may only be used during specific sessions. Corridors, meeting areas, and collaborative spaces also experience changing occupancy patterns throughout the day.
Another challenge came from the scale of the lighting network itself. Communication between devices needed to remain stable across multiple sections of the campus without delays or interruptions. At the same time, the system had to remain simple enough for staff to manage comfortably.
Solutions
Radiar ARD32 – 32 DALI Driver Room Controller
Radiar ARD32 became a key part of the deployment due to the large number of DALI fixtures installed across lecture halls, classrooms, and common campus spaces. Supporting up to 32 driver devices, it enabled centralized control for large lighting zones while allowing smooth dimming and flexible DALI management. Its support for both DALI and 0-10V configurations also added flexibility for different lighting requirements across university buildings.
Radiar AFD1/4 – 4 Child DALI Controller
Radiar AFD1/4 was deployed in smaller classrooms, faculty spaces, and selected learning areas where localized DALI lighting control was required. Its compact form factor made it suitable for distributed lighting management across the campus.
Omni TED – Trailing Edge Dimmer
Omni TED helped provide smooth dimming performance for compatible lighting loads, especially in spaces where softer lighting transitions improved comfort and usability.
Enor E – Gateway with RTC, Ethernet & Astronomical Clock
Enor E connected the entire Lumos Controls ecosystem and enabled remote scheduling, monitoring, and management. Its built-in astronomical clock and RTC functionality ensured schedules remained accurate even during power interruptions or network downtime.
Catron AI – Wireless Switch Interface Device
Catron AI allowed existing wall switches to become part of the wireless lighting network. This made it easier to modernize controls without requiring major infrastructure changes.
Senor E – BLE Mesh Range Extender
Since the university campus covered large areas, Senor E devices were deployed to strengthen BLE Mesh communication between lighting devices. This helped maintain stable and responsive communication throughout the network.
Catron V – Wireless 5 Button Remote
Catron V gave faculty and facility teams flexible control over lighting scenes, brightness, and color temperature in presentation rooms, collaborative learning spaces, and multi-purpose halls. The wireless design allowed users to adjust lighting without relying on fixed wall controls.
EDRPB – Wireless Self-Powered 4 Button Switch
EDRPB switches were added in selected campus zones where quick scene changes were needed without additional wiring. Since the device is self-powered, installation remained simple while still providing reliable wireless scene control for classrooms and shared areas.
Cyrus AP – AC Powered Wireless PIR Motion & Light Sensor
Cyrus AP sensors played an important role across classrooms, corridors, meeting spaces, and shared campus areas. Installed with surface mount and low-bay lens accessories, these sensors helped lighting respond automatically based on occupancy and available daylight.
In lecture rooms and study areas, lights adjusted naturally when students and faculty entered or left the space. In corridors and transitional areas, the sensors helped avoid unnecessary lighting operation during low activity periods while still maintaining comfort and visibility across the campus
.
Lumos Controls Mobile App
The Lumos Controls mobile app made centralized lighting control across the campus much easier for facility teams through a tablet-based interface. From commissioning and configuration to lighting monitoring, teams could efficiently manage classrooms, lecture halls, and shared university spaces from a single connected platform.
Result
The university now operates with a far more connected and adaptable lighting environment. Facility teams can manage lighting without relying on manual adjustments across buildings, while students and staff benefit from lighting that responds more naturally to how spaces are used. Occupancy-based lighting control in classrooms, corridors, and shared spaces also helped the university create a more responsive campus environment without adding operational complexity for facility teams.
Wireless scene control, mobile access, occupancy sensing, and DALI integration all came together to create a system that feels modern without becoming complicated. More importantly, the university now has a lighting infrastructure that can continue growing alongside future campus needs.
