Background

The UPS Store in Riverside, California is a busy place. Customers walk in throughout the day to ship packages, print documents, or pick up deliveries. At the same time, staff members move constantly between counters, storage areas, and packing zones. Lighting needs to stay consistent, comfortable, and dependable from opening to closing.

At this Riverside location, the goal was not to experiment with complex controls. The focus was on creating a lighting setup that simply works. Lights should turn on when needed, stay at the right level during peak hours, and support staff without adding extra steps to their routine.

Objectives

• Provide steady lighting in customer service and work areas 

• Reduce the need for manual switching in secondary spaces 

• Allow staff to make quick adjustments when required 

• Keep the system easy to manage across the store 

Challenges:

Retail service spaces come with a unique set of challenges. The front counter needs lighting that feels welcoming and professional, while packing and storage areas require brighter, more functional light. These zones are used differently throughout the day, which makes fixed lighting inefficient. 

Another challenge was staff usability. Employees should not have to think about lighting while helping customers. The system had to feel natural, respond automatically in the background, and still offer control when someone wanted it. 

Solutions

Radiar AF10 – 2 channel AC powered 0–10V fixture controller with inbuilt relay 
Radiar AF10 was used to manage multiple lighting circuits across the store with smooth dimming control. It helped maintain consistent lighting levels at customer service counters while allowing different brightness levels in packing and work areas. This flexibility ensured the space stayed comfortable and functional throughout the day. 

PSC-WCM-450-BLE-WS – Single channel AC powered 0–10V room controller with inbuilt relay 
The PSC-450 room controllers were installed to provide dedicated control for specific zones within the store. These controllers handled reliable switching and dimming in workspaces where predictable lighting behavior was important for daily operations. 

PSC-DM-I-WS-100-BLE-WS – Wireless Motion Sensor Dimmer Wall Switch 
The 1-button sensor switches gave staff an easy way to interact with the lighting when needed. With built-in motion sensing and dimming, these switches allowed quick manual adjustments without interrupting workflow or requiring technical know-how. 

Cyrus AP – AC powered wireless PIR motion and light sensor 
Cyrus AP sensors were deployed in areas such as storage rooms and secondary spaces. Using ceiling mounts with low-bay lens accessories, these sensors ensured lights turned on only when someone was present, keeping those zones practical without unnecessary lighting. 

Enor E – Gateway with RTC, Ethernet and astronomical clock 
Enor E connected the entire lighting system and handled scheduling and time-based control. Its real-time clock and astronomical scheduling helped keep daily lighting routines consistent, even after power interruptions, while also enabling remote monitoring and adjustments when required.

Result

The store now runs with lighting that adapts quietly to daily activity. Customer areas remain evenly lit and comfortable, while back areas respond automatically to movement. Staff members have control when they need it, but rarely have to think about lighting during busy hours. 

The system reduced unnecessary lighting in low use areas and brought more consistency to the store environment. Operations became smoother, and the space feels better organized throughout the day.
